How to Reduce the Dangers of Computer Eye Strain

If your job has you staring at a computer screen for more than eight hours, that can do a lot of damage to your eyes. But the office isn’t the only place where you’re watching screens. You have your smartphone, your computer at home, and your television. Even stores have more and more screens. If avoiding the glare to give your eyes a break isn’t an option and you can’t set a cap on the number of hours you watch a screen, that doesn’t mean you’re doomed to eyestrain. Here are a few things you can do instead:

1. Dim the lights.

Office lights and daylight are really bright, and that can clash with your focus on the screen. It’s even worse if that light is reflecting off the screen. So dim the lights and switch to softer, less directionally-focused lighting. Also, try to avoid fluorescents whenever possible. While you might not be able to control the lights at work, set up your home screens for less eyestrain.

2. Wear computer glasses.

Glasses don’t just protect your eyes from physical damage and give your eyes better focus. Different tints and finishes can make life easier on the eyes. Look for glasses with a yellow or peach tint that can help you see better in dim environments and reduce the harshness of blue computer lighting. Computer glasses also have an anti-glare finish, so look for labels with an anti-reflective, or AR, coating.

3. Fix your computer’s settings.

If you’ve fixed your environment and protected your eyes, the next step is to customize your computer’s visual settings. Increase the text size to reduce squinting. Also, make sure your text is colored so it’s dark against a light background all the time, even on sites you regularly visit.
