Having the right glasses for the job is essential for the proper functioning of any lampworking machine. Whether you are using a gas-powered or a hand-powered lamp, there are a few key things you should know about the different types of lampworking glasses.

Sodium Flare Polycarbonate Lenses

Sodium Flare Polycarbonate lenses for lampworking glasses are a great way to protect your eyes from harmful UV and infrared light. They’re made with light weight material and are designed to filter out most of the infrared light while providing the highest-impact protection.

Aside, from sodium flare reduction the Polycarbonate lens also provides excellent UV protection. This makes it ideal for lampworking on soft glass. It also offers a high Visible Light Transmission and is extremely durable.

The polycarbonate lens also has a scratch-resistant coating. It is available in numerous styles, shapes, and sizes of frames including a broad range of safety frames.

Sodium Flare Polycarbonate lenses are perfect for lampworking on soft glass types. They’re also very effective in filtering out the sodium flare. They’re not recommended for working on hard glass. It’s best to buy the proper type of lens for your glass type.

Aside from providing UV and some IR protection, the Polycarbonate lens also has the ability to block the brightest yellow light emitted by borosilicate and soft glass. It’s also lightweight and durable. It is recommended for neon, glass working, and Lampworking.

Another advantage of the Sodium Flare Polycarbonate lens is the high Visible Light Transmission. This allows you to see glass in the flame without losing your eyesight. It’s also the perfect filter for working on neon and neon glass.

The ACE or ACE/AUR-92 is a multi-notch filter that removes wavelengths at a specific frequency to improve color perception. This is the newest type of lens to hit the market. It’s made with rare earth oxides which improve color perception and enhance color recognition. It’s also the most efficient of the tri-filters.

Ace Didymium Lenses

ACE Didymium Glass Lenses is designed to reduce sodium flare and provide ultraviolet protection. They are available in numerous high-impact plastic frames. The lenses are also available in a number of metal and wrap frame styles.  These lenses are suitable for kiln, furnace, lampworking and glassworking applications.

The 3.2-mm thick glass provides good protection from ultraviolet radiation from 360 nm to 725 nm. However, it does not offer much protection in the near-or mid-infraredinfrared range. However, it does provide excellent filtration at the sodium line. This makes the glass appropriate for a number of glass-working applications with low radiation.

Didymium Glass Lenses has a soft, comfortable fit. They are also available in a variety of frame styles. They are no longer available with prescription details. Using Didymium Lenses provides safe protection against the harmful UV rays and sodium flares caused by torch work and silver soldering.

Didymium filters are typically used with gas powered forges and soldering torches. They provide good protection from ultraviolet light but do not provide adequate protection for glass-working applications. The glasses are not recommended for prolonged use. They are also not suitable for applications that exceed 1000 degrees.

BoroView Lenses

Finally a Polycarbonate Lens for the Lampworker’s and Hot Glass Workers that does it all in one pair of glasses.  This material filters out the sodium flare and also offers both excellent UV and IR protection.  Phillips BoroView 3 & 5 lenses are designed to meet the need for the extra UV and IR protection needed when working on borosilicate glass.

Using a pair of BoroView glasses isn’t as daunting as it may first appear. As long as you’re not putting your eyeballs on the kiln, you should be able to enjoy a glass or two without feeling like a glass cannon. BoroView glasses are also available in a variety of eye sizes and tints to cater to the most discriminating of patrons. Using BoroView glasses also reduces the glare attributed to using standard eyeglasses. Using BoroView glasses also reduces glare and reduces ocular pain, a major complaint among glassworkers. 

BoroTruView Lenses

Using Phillips BoroTruView Lenses for lampworking glasses is a great way to protect your eyes from UV light and IR. These lenses are made of polycarbonate and feature a gray IR filter for added protection. They also offer excellent color recognition when working with colored glass. The lenses are designed for true glassworking artists. You can find a range of styles of lenses, including those that are fitted with side shields, in various shapes and frame types.

The Phillips Hot Glassworking Eyewear is made with plastic lenses that are scientifically engineered and optically perfect. These lenses provide IR protection, UV protection, and shade #3 or #5, which reduce the brightness of colored Borosilicate glass. You can also find clip-on lenses to wear in place of your regular glasses. You can choose from a range of colors and shades, and a variety of styles to fit your personality.
